OFFICIAL LAUNCH! - read the press release

July 30, 2014

Dear all,

With the attached press release, we officially launched our campaign to reappraise the proposals for the Goodsyard and to protect the vibrancy and character of the neighbourhood from the threat of generic high rise towers.

As submitted by joint venture partners Hammerson and Ballymore, the proposed scheme is an impenetrable development of six towers ranging from 15 to 48 stories, bringing Hong Kong-style skyscrapers to an historic low-rise residential part of East London.  The development is 40 stories taller than the mid-rise TEA Building, a local landmark and exemplar regeneration scheme that has fostered Shoreditch’s creative community.  The towers will loom over Shoreditch, Brick Lane, Spitalfields, the Boundary Estate and Bethnal Green Road, cause significant shadowing and wind tunnels and destroy the character of the surrounding streets.  The proposed scheme is not fit for purpose, but oversized and underwhelming.

In summary, we are fighting for:

- A mid-rise solution informed by the surrounding local neighbourhoods and the human scale of London streetscapes respecting the Conservation Area heritage

- Development integrated with accessible pocket parks to encourage a range of uses and occupation

- A comprehensive community benefits package addressing housing, jobs and training

More details in the press release here, and of course on our campaign page here

Given what's at stake and the ridiculous scale of what's proposed, this will be an epic community battle...but one that can be won!  To be successful though we need to gather all like-minded souls, and in the modern age that means signing up for our email newsletter by clicking here, and following us on twitter at @morelightpower, and getting everyone you know to do the same.

Plopping these monstrosities in the midst of our neighbourhoods is something we will regret for generations.  Let’s stop it before it starts.

Sincerely,

The More Light, More Power Campaign
